Proposed Compost Facility FAQs

aerial map of facility location

Where does my green bin material go now?

Most residential green bin material is transported to composting facilities outside Sonoma County, including Novato and Ukiah.

Who owns the site?

The County of Sonoma owns the property. The project is managed by Sonoma County Public Infrastructure in collaboration with Zero Waste Sonoma.

How much material would be composted?

Up to 70,000 tons per year initially — about 80% of residential green bin material generated in the County.

Would the public be able to buy compost?

Yes. Finished compost would be available for public purchase on Saturdays.

Would the facility accept self-haul?

No. Only material collected through residential green bin programs would be accepted.

I live nearby. How can I provide input?

There will be multiple opportunities for public participation during the CEQA process and at future community meetings.

A community open house is anticipated in Spring 2026.
