Traffic Engineering
Sonoma County Public Infrastructure manages the engineering, construction, and maintenance of streetlights, signs, traffic signals, pavement markings, and other devices that regulate traffic and improve roadway safety.
Our Traffic Engineering team works to ensure County roads are designed and operated for maximum safety and efficiency. All traffic control devices are installed and maintained by trained professionals and must meet state standards.
What We Do
- Maintain and operate traffic control devices (signals, signs, striping, and lights)
- Set and review speed limits and other roadway regulations
- Conduct traffic surveys and safety studies
- Implement traffic calming measures, like speed humps
- Oversee crosswalks, parking restrictions, and signage
- Support community programs, such as Adopt-a-Road and roadside clean-up

Speed Limits
Enforcement
Speed limits are enforced by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office.
Request Enforcement
If speeding is a recurring issue in your area, the best course of action is to contact CHP and request enhanced enforcement. Provide details such as location, days, and times when violations are most frequent.
Setting Speed Limits
Speed limits are determined using Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidelines and engineering assessments. Any changes must be reviewed by Sonoma County engineering staff and approved by the Board of Supervisors.
To request a review, contact (707) 565-2231.
Traffic Surveys
Average Daily Traffic (ADT)
Represents the average number of vehicles traveling a roadway in a 24-hour period.
AM & PM Peak Hours
Indicates the hours of highest traffic volume and the number of vehicles counted during that time.
Speed Survey Metrics
- 85th Percentile Speed: Speed at or below which 85% of drivers travel.
- Established Speed Limit: Speed adopted based on survey data.
- Radar Date: Date of traffic survey.
- Certification Date: Review/approval date by the managing Civil Engineer.
Crosswalks
Definition
Marked pedestrian crossings intended to help people cross safely and alert drivers to yield.
New Installations
Requests for new crosswalks are carefully evaluated by County engineering staff to ensure safety.
To inquire, contact the Public Infrastructure main office, 707-565-2550.
Traffic Enforcement
Who to Call
Traffic safety enforcement is handled by CHP, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, and local police departments. Report recurring violations with specific details (location, days, times).
Traffic Safety
Motorists and pedestrians must follow the rules of the road. Violations can result in citations or other penalties. Never drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or impairing substances.
Speed Humps
Overview
Speed humps can reduce vehicle speeds in residential areas but also have drawbacks.
Conditions for Installation
Requests must follow the County’s Speed Hump Policy.
Parking Restrictions
Establishing No Parking Zones
New restrictions require Board of Supervisors approval and community support. Contact your local Supervisor to inquire.
Typical Prohibited Parking
Parking is not allowed:
- In an intersection or crosswalk
- Within 15 feet of a hydrant or fire station driveway
- In front of driveways
- On sidewalks, bridges, or medians
- At bus stops
- When obstructing the roadway
- Double-parked or within 6 feet of the center line on narrow streets
Adopt-a-Road
Program Information
The Community Roadside Clean-Up Program invites groups and individuals to help maintain and beautify County roadsides.
Traffic Control Devices
Traffic control devices include signs, signals, and pavement markings that guide drivers and pedestrians. Placement is determined by County engineers following strict safety and operational standards.
For statewide design requirements, see the California Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
Traffic Impact Study Guidelines
Developers and planners must conduct traffic impact studies in line with County standards.
