SR-12 Pedestrian Crossing Improvements Project

Map detail of proposed project site improvements

What’s Happening

The SR-12 Pedestrian Crossing Improvements Project is improving the crosswalks on Highway 12 at Waterman Avenue and Central Avenue by implementing Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs).

How We Got Here

Following recent streetscape improvements along Highway 12, pedestrian activity has increased along the corridor. Waterman Avenue and Central Avenue were identified as key locations for enhancements based on ongoing corridor evaluations, including traffic patterns and community input.

Why It Matters

These improvements will enhance pedestrian visibility and increase driver awareness at marked crossings, helping to improve safety for people walking along the Highway 12 corridor. The project builds on previous investments to support a safer, more accessible, and connected community.

What’s Next

An encroachment permit has been submitted to Caltrans and is currently under review. Once approved, construction of the RRFB improvements will begin.

Timeline

  • Spring 2026 – Design Complete
  • Spring 2027 – Begin Construction
