For Immediate Release
Board of Supervisors authorizes environmental review for proposed compost facility
SANTA ROSA, CA | May 07, 2026
The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors on April 28 authorized environmental review for a proposed new compost facility. Sonoma County is inviting residents and community members to learn more about the proposed compost facility and share feedback at two upcoming public meetings.
The proposed facility would be located at 5200 Slusser Road, near Santa Rosa, at a former county landfill site and is being explored as a way to process residential green bin material locally. Currently, this material is transported outside the county for processing.
If approved, the facility would process up to 70,000 tons of residential green bin material each year—about 80 percent of what is generated countywide—and produce compost for local farms, vineyards, and residents.
“Community input is an important part of this process,” said Johannes J. Hoevertsz, Director of Sonoma County Public Infrastructure. “These meetings are an opportunity for residents to learn more about the proposal, ask questions, and share feedback as we continue early planning work.”
The project is still in the proposal stage. If it moves forward, the centrally located facility would be designed to reduce truck travel, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and support state requirements to divert organic waste from landfills.
The County will host two open house–style meetings where community members can stop in at any time to speak with staff, review project information, and provide input:
- Thursday, May 14, 5 to 7 p.m.
- Saturday, May 16, 12 to 2 p.m.
- Location:
- Zero Waste Sonoma
195 Concourse Blvd., Suite B
Santa Rosa, CA 95403
- Zero Waste Sonoma
Spanish interpretation will be available at both meetings.
The proposed facility would use modern systems designed to manage odors, control emissions, and protect water quality. Environmental review and additional opportunities for public input will occur before any final decisions are made.
