After two days of water sampling by Sonoma County’s environmental health department at Doran, Campbell Cove and Salmon Creek beaches, the advisory to stay out of the water at these three beaches has been lifted. The water testing was done following this week’s sewage spill at the Russian River County Sanitation District treatment plant in Guerneville and the samples were found to be in the appropriate range.

The advisory remains in effect at Gualala, Black Point, Stillwater and Goat Rock beaches as the county awaits results of the second samplings there, which are required by state law. If the numbers come back within range, the advisory is expected to be lifted at those beaches on Monday.

Results are still pending for the Russian River beaches downriver from the spill as well; if the test numbers come back in range, the advisory at those beaches is also expected to be lifted Monday.

Beach-goers are still advised to practice healthy habits, such as washing ocean and river water off after being in the water, and washing pets off as well.

“Winter storms typically stir up a variety of bacterial contaminants, so getting into the habit of rinsing off is a good practice,” said county interim health officer Dr. Michael Stacey.
