Universal Declaration of Human Rights Discussion with the Incarcerated Population
2 to 3 hour workshop in one or two sessions to read, interpret, and discuss the meaning and implications of the UDHR among an incarcerated population to include (if possible) residents of the SC jail, officers, volunteers, and family members.
The discussion is a philosophical exploration of how the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) relates to Sonoma County. Framed by the Sonoma County Human Rights Commission’s mission to foster better relations through education, advocacy, and action, the conversation includes all community members, including the incarcerated population.
The focus is not on international compliance or conditions in detention, but on interpreting human rights as a personal belief system versus a social system of actions. Participants will examine individual UDHR articles, consider potential omissions, and explore how personal beliefs influence others and shape community systems. Ultimately, the discussion asks whether aspirational human rights can be understood and promoted to support recognition, appreciation, and inclusion within Sonoma County’s diverse community.
