Understanding Human Dignity: A Civic Education Workshop
This project uses the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a framework to explore respect, fairness, accountability, and personal responsibility within community life, particularly for incarcerated individuals. Through guided discussion and reflection, participants are encouraged to consider how their choices and actions affect families, neighborhoods, and the broader community. The workshop recognizes that incarcerated people remain human beings with the right to dignity, education, and a voice, despite the suspension of certain civil rights during incarceration. Many participants remain deeply connected to their families and communities, making opportunities for reflection, growth, and engagement especially meaningful. The goal of the project is to help participants understand how the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights can support personal growth, informed decision-making, and advocacy for healthier and more equitable communities. The sessions are designed to foster respectful dialogue, self-awareness, and a sense that every individual’s experiences, perspectives, and aspirations matter.
