Board of Supervisors honors work of Sonoma County Civil Grand Jury

SANTA ROSA, CA | March 03, 2026

The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors today recognized the work of volunteers who serve on civil grand juries, the independent watchdog that investigates local government to promote efficiency and integrity in public service.

The Board of Supervisors adopted a gold resolution proclaiming March as Civil Grand Jury Appreciation Month. The resolution highlights the important work of the Sonoma County Civil Grand Jury, which is currently accepting applications to serve during its 2026-2027 term.

“Civil grand jurors perform an essential public service by learning how local government works and identifying ways it can work better,” said Supervisor Rebecca Hermosillo, chair of the Board of Supervisors. “That kind of independent oversight is healthy and necessary. It helps ensure that public dollars are spent wisely and that everyone’s voice matters. I encourage constituents to consider this opportunity to serve our community and help make a difference.”

The Sonoma County Civil Grand Jury is made up of volunteers who dedicate a year of service to the watchdog body, which starts its new term on June 24. The jury, which operates under the authority of the Sonoma County Superior Court, is empowered to investigate the operations of the County, cities and special districts. Each jury has the authority to select whatever topics it feels are important to investigate.

The results of most civil grand jury investigations are contained in reports that detail the jury's findings and propose solutions. By law, the governing body of any agency that is the subject of a civil grand jury report must comment on its findings and recommendations. The comments must specify what action, if any, will be taken in response to the jury’s recommendations or explain why no action will be taken.

The Sonoma County Civil Grand Jury encourages residents of diverse ages, professions and life experiences to apply to serve. Jurors typically spend about 10 hours per week on one investigation and may devote additional time if they choose to participate in multiple projects. To apply, visit the Civil Grand Jury page on the Sonoma County Superior Court’s website. The application deadline is May 15.
