Cannabis Permits and Inspections
Agriculture/Weights & Measures Cannabis Program Sunset
Under the updated Cannabis Land Use Ordinance, the Department of Agriculture/Weights and Measures is no longer issuing ministerial permits for cannabis cultivation in agricultural zoning districts, effective July 1, 2026. All cannabis permitting is through Permit Sonoma.
Please visit Permit Sonoma's Cannabis Zoning and Land Use website for more information on which types of cannabis uses are allowed by right, and which need a permit. All cannabis uses, regardless of whether they require a land use permit or not, will require an annual cannabis business license issued by the County Executive’s Office.
For more information on the ordinance and other cannabis program details, please visit the Cannabis Program website.
The Department of Agriculture/Weights and Measures continues to process Industrial Hemp registrations. Visit our Industrial Hemp page for more details.
Best Management Practices Compliance
The Department of Agriculture will continue to conduct in-season monitoring inspections of outdoor, indoor, and mixed light cultivation, and nursery operations to verify compliance with the Sonoma county ordinance and Cannabis Cultivation Best Management Practices.
Scales and Scanner Inspections
The Division of Weights and Measures will be inspecting and sealing all scales used by cultivators and dispensaries across which a sale is made. Scanner systems at point of sale must be accurate and labeling of packaged products must be compliant with State and Federal regulations.
